Achondrite, ureilite (diamond-free)
Total mass : 615 g
Specimen in collection :
What characterizes this meteorite over other ureilites is that substantially all of the carbon in the meteorite, and surrounding the small crystals of olivine which mainly compose the matrix of this rock is present as graphite and not as nano-diamond as this is usually the case in other ureilites. The .001-.005% of diamonds and lonsdaleite (another isomorphic carbon) in this meteorite class make them extremely difficult to cut; The lack of diamonds in NWA 5884 provides easier cutting and produces beautiful slices.
